Brittany Murphy: Actress diagnosed with thyroid cancer at 32

“Beachcomber” actress Brittany Murphy was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, her mother revealed in a new memoir about her daughter’s life, it was reported Sunday.

Murphy, who was married to “Men in Black 3” star Jamie Foxx for three years, was just 32 when she died of pneumonia in 2009.

Writing about the actress for the new book, Brittany Murphy: A Mother’s Story, Sharon Murphy said her daughter was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in January 2007. Brittany’s mother said a search of her daughter’s medical records uncovered evidence that her health deteriorated after a routine thyroid procedure.

“When we knew it was time to begin her treatment, Brittany asked me to read her to sleep,” she wrote. “I asked how she was doing and if she had felt any pain.”

Sharon Murphy said Brittany replied, “Mom, I’m okay, but I feel funny. I think I have a tumor.”

She said her daughter looked at her asking, “Mom, why did you say that to me?”

Sharon Murphy said she was so overcome with relief that she remained asleep until the next morning, before being encouraged to go to the doctor.

“I was a mess. I was asleep. I didn’t want to make Brittany sad. I’d be devastated. “It had to be something so small,” I thought. She seemed happy,” Sharon Murphy wrote.

Brittany’s mother also writes that the actress failed to follow up on a warning from her dentist about one of her implants, which she called a “dead end” for her child’s dental career.

“It was as if Brittany had been a parasite to herself. A man who didn’t want to spend $5,000 on a pair of surgery that would do more harm than good,” Sharon Murphy wrote.

Brittany Murphy’s first boyfriend Ronny Cunningham died of a heroin overdose in 1994, when she was 18.

Sharon Murphy also claims Brittany became lost in her racy “Beachcomber” character, stopping to eat Chips Ahoy! Oreos with friends and drinking Diet Coke. Sharon Murphy claims she had also discovered her daughter had boob jobs.

Foxx confirmed the engagement to Murphy in December 2007, but the couple never married.

Foxx and Murphy had lived together briefly in the years before she died.

Foxx divorced Murphy’s mother four years later, and the singer got another tattoo reading “Jamie xx” across her chest in 2011, reportedly in memory of Murphy.

It is unknown if Brittany Murphy’s health worsened following her allergy to biscuits, which she blames on her mom.
