Xabi Alonso has announced he will return to his native Barcelona to advise the club on ways to use social media.

The Liverpool midfielder has won three Champions League titles in four years at Anfield, but said that away from club football, he remained “an ardent Barça fan” and decided the time was right to return.

“I hope I can help, but then I feel even more confident when I hear the applause,” he said in an interview with Catalunya Radio. “I remember the days when they didn’t speak English, and only a few actually knowing how to spell their name … I will fight to regain the pride they [the club] lost over time.”

The 31-year-old is a two-time Ballon d’Or winner with Real Madrid and earned two Champions League titles in three years at Anfield. He played seven years for the Barça youth team before making his senior debut as a 19-year-old in a 6-1 win over Seville in 2000.

Alonso, who began his career at Barcelona’s La Masia academy, rejoined the club as a player in 2005 after being released by Real Madrid. “I will share what I have learnt about how football should be played,” he said. “This is where my heart is, at home. I come from the centre, that’s the place where they pay my bills and get my benefits.”
