Virginia IT system hit with ransomware attack

A Virginia Information Technologies Agency system with about 5,000 employees was hit with a ransomware attack on Wednesday, the agency confirmed. The IT agency revealed on Wednesday morning that it had been the target of “malicious hacking activity” and that it had a “self-protection patch” to protect the system against the attack. It also said there was no danger to patient data.

“We are all taking appropriate time to review and implement security procedures and tools to further mitigate this type of attack,” said Office of the Virginia Secretary of Information Technology Karen O. Ternes in a statement. “We hope to be back to normal operations shortly.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement to the Washington Post that it was “aware of the issue” and that it was in contact with the state government.
